Nine Lives Quilt Reaches the End

Three years ago I told the story of my nine lives lap quilt here.

Basically, it all started when my dear sweet niece made a lovely lap quilt for me and I traded her for the left over scraps.  I used the scraps to make some back pillows for my sofa, and used even more scraps to make banners and wall hangings, which promptly sold in my Etsy shop.  At that point I figured I had used up about six of the lap quilt's nine lives.

Fast forward to this summer, when I redecorated the main floor of my condo and no longer needed the pillows. So ... of course, I had to take the pillows apart and make more banners and hangers!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the nine lives are now complete.  There is no more.

(Oh wait. I still have a zip lock bag of teeny tiny pieces ....)

Redecorating Project - Target for Change: TV cabinet

Here's the first item up in my redecorating project this summer.

I have had this TV cabinet for many years and it has been a functional piece for me. I wanted to be able to move it around so I added wheels to the bottom, but they weren't very secure and I always worried that I was going to tip my TV over. With my nephew's help, the first thing I did was add a plywood piece on the bottom and larger wheels.  I had some satin paint left over from painting my studio/workroom upstairs (PPG Julep Green) and wanted to try chalk paint so I checked around on Pinterest and elsewhere for instructions.
  1. I used a recipe with calcium carbonate that I found here
  2. I purchased the calcium carbonate on Amazon here
  3. I purchased French vintage ads from CreatifBelle on Etsy.
Then it was just a question of painting the stand inside and out.

One glitch was with the graphics.  I tried a transfer technique that was a miserable failure so  - back to the drawing board! I ended up printing the graphics on good quality matte photo paper, trimmed around the edges, glued them down with gel matte medium, and added a satin poly topcoat.

The floral knobs were saves from a long-ago project. I knew I would have a use for them someday!

The inside was painted as well, and a few of my wooden CD boxes got a coat of spray paint.

I gathered some decor pieces from other places in my home and, along with one of the French graphics mounted on a scrap piece of wood,  I was done!

What's next?

My Redecorating Project - BEFORE

As I mentioned yesterday, I redecorated the main floor of my condo this summer.  The main thing I wanted to change was the wall color.  Even though my living room/dining room has an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, I don't have good light.  It's a northern exposure, there's a small "forest" behind me, and an overhang on my patio outside.  All those together tend to block too much of the light coming in.  The wall color I chose the last time is a cool color, and though I still love it, it was just a bit too dark considering my lack of strong daylight. I also read recently that decorators advise using a warm color for a northern exposure and a cool color for a southern exposure.  Makes sense!

So here's what my condo looked like when I started.  I was in a hurry to get going, but I wish I had taken time to remove some of the clutter!  Oh well, here it is.

Dining room area; kitchen off to the left, wall of windows on the right.  Targets for change: Wall color, rug

Targets for change: shelves, laminate counter

Foyer; living room to the left, front door to the right. Targets for change: wall color, door colors, corner shelf unit, lamp, wall decor

Living Room; Targets for change: SOFA, floor lamp in background, stereo shelving, wall decor, shelf decor, rug

Targets for change: drapes, new top for my mom's vintage sewing machine base. I learned to sew on that machine.  (Please ignore the messy potting bench outside!)

Target for change: TV cabinet

Targets for change:  mirrored planter, framed wall decor

Whew!  Lots of work scheduled!  In future posts I'll take the changes one or two at a time.

Coming Back to Myself

This is a new canvas I put together this summer as part of my condo redecorating project.  It is so me – so many interests, so many projects, so many things to do and people to see – that I wanted to acknowledge what I have been going through.  In case you think this is a new thought, the quote at the bottom of the page was put there in 2009 when I started this blog.  Wow! Seven years!

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.   John Burroughs

I have to confess, though, that for the past few years I let all that mental running get to me.  Between caregiving (for myself and others) and other life challenges, I lost a little bit of my drive to create.  My Etsy shops have been neglected and I used every distraction to keep me from hunkering down in my studio to create on a consistent basis.  It got to a point this year where I felt I wanted to sell everything off and close my shops. Well, the “sell” part didn’t go very well so shutting down wasn’t an option.  Instead, I slowly started coming back to a desire to be creative again.

Part of what invigorated me was my decision to redecorate most of the first floor of my condo, but with as much DYI as possible to save money.  I’m so pleased with the result!  Over the next few weeks I’ll start posting what I did and how I did it.  Since finishing that (for now – still have two bathrooms and a bedroom to work on this fall), I have been back in the studio creating new work, which I will also be showing you.

I’m going to try real hard to be consistent with my blog posts.  I have let it go too long. I hope you are all still with me – I missed you guys!
