When We Remember

I received word last night that one of my best friends from high school passed away.  Sad to say, we hadn't seen each other in quite a few years and our contact lately was reduced to Christmas cards.  I had reached out to her a few times to get together, but for reasons known only to her she always found excuses to beg off. I don't believe she had any animosity toward me - I believe it had more to do with some insecurities on her part. Ironically, we are less than two weeks away from our high school reunion, and I was so looking forward to seeing and talking to her.

And now there's no time left to rekindle that friendship.  I'm sad, somewhat regretful, and certainly thinking about my own mortality. We never know how much time we have, do we?

For you, Di.

When We Remember
You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she’s gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she’d want:
open your eyes,
and go on.
